5 Ways to Switch Up Your Protein Powder Routine

6 Minute Read

Tired of the same 3 flavors of protein shake you’ve been drinking for eternity? So are most of us, which is why people are finally exploring and mixing protein powder into a bunch of other stuff. It’s a great way to switch up your routine without actually switching up your routine. And if you’re on a plateau of low motivation, a new idea might be the only thing standing between choosing your protein shake and ordering those Cajun-spiced fries you’ve been thinking about since Tuesday.

It's a similar plight no matter what your daily wellness supplement may be, so these suggestions can inspire anyone trying to remain consistent on their fitness journey! Here are our five favorite things to mix protein powder with:

1. Any Type of Milk

Whether cow, oat or soy, milk is a great vehicle for protein powder. Plus, these creamy beverages are full of calcium, protein, and other good nutrients on their own. Adding protein powder and blending with ice creates a milkshake low in sugar and high in healthy ingredients.

2. Coffee or Tea

Looking for something with more of an herbal/spice blend? Darker, hot drinks are great to mix protein powder with – it basically substitutes for cream and sugar, adding a protein kick to your daily mug.

3. Greens Powders

Protein powder with greens blends like MTE and AG1 mixes greens and protein for a super-packed daily wellness blend. MTE’s greens are flavored with citrusy vibes, so mixed with protein powder, you’d get a creamsicle flavor that isn’t just filled with nootropics, adaptogens, and superfoods, but now also a kick of the good muscle-building stuff.

4. Coconut Water

Coconut water already has a sweet-ish vibe with just a hint of tropical fruit at the end, so acts well with any type of flavor of protein powder. Because coconut water is filled with electrolytes, magnesium, and potassium, it’s great for fluid balance and muscle health, which only adds to the efficacy of your protein powder.

5. Kefir or Yogurt

Another liquid with real versatility is kefir, which is basically a type of drinkable yogurt. Yogurts are chocked full of good probiotics and protein, and they’re low in fat and sugars. Mix protein powder with it and you’ve got an earthy and complex version of a milkshake!

Bonus Tip: You Can Use Protein Powder With Food!

Miss desserts? Me too. Pretend you’re doing something great for yourself and not riding the cheat meal line by using protein powder in a sweet baked treat like brownies, cookies, or muffins. It’s treat-yourself culture, but productive! The best part is, it’s super easy. Protein Cakery has a great listicle of dessert recipes to try with protein powder – check it out.

One of the hardest parts of being on a fitness schedule – whether you’re bulking/cutting, dieting, maintaining, conditioning (it’s always something!) – is eating and drinking the same 3 or 4 things every day for months to years at a time. Mixing daily protein powders with MTE, AG1, flour and eggs, or whatever else sounds good to you can help you get out of your rut while staying on track.
